Minimum Requirements for Adult Belt Test
The following is description of basic requirements for all levels of belt advancement with AMA.
1. Attitude A good attitude is required at all times in karate class. 2. Rules & Terms An oral test will determine if the student has a good knowledge of the terms. 3. Kata The "kata" or form must be performed with a level of proficiency. 4. Techniques This part of the test is the most challenging. A set level of proficiency is required for each belt level, regardless of age, coordination, or physical ability. Because of this requirement, some students will advance before others. Each student has the ability to achieve a higher level, but might have to train harder or longer than another student in order to become proficient at executing the required techniques.
Advancement in rank is optional. The nomination for rank advancement does not guarantee that a student will automatically pass the belt test. We attempt to teach all students the required techniques. The instructors may wait to issue a nomination or may wish to discuss, with you, their concerns about the test. We would much rather tell a student that he/she is "not quite ready" then for a student to take a test and not achieve the next rank. All instructors will be happy, at any time, to discuss your progress with you.
Belt tests are designed to challenge the student and are used as a gauge to determine the student's knowledge of terms and techniques. Each belt test is designed to improve a student's confidence.
